There are moments of variety in some levels, and the collectible lore helps flesh the world out better as you dive into the creepy atmosphere and mythology of Evil West, but a mostly unlikable cast of generic stereotypes and some strange graphical decisions can derail the experience. ![]() Evil West’s biggest strength is undoubtedly its deliciously gory vampire extermination gameplay, but its supporting structures fall flat by comparison. It’s not a bad formula by any stretch of the imagination, but each level usually boils down to a linear walk through empty sections that occasionally contain a small treasure chest hidden out of sight a very obvious arena filled with enemies to kill and a repeat of that structure until you reach the stage’s end. ![]() Weaving in and out of combos while avoiding taking damage from a braindead zombie covered in giant leeches unleashing some point-blank buckshot at hideous monsters and using a flamethrower to burn through giant spiders all make for a good time.īut the responsibility of maintaining a sense of variety falls squarely on the player, as Evil West can become monotonous. There’s a fluidity to Jesse’s movements that gets better as you invest more time and resources into his growing arsenal, taking you from blood-sucking bounty hunter to a technology-enhanced supernatural slayer who can keep pace with the undead. It’s a wonderfully satisfying selection of savage offense that also has a few hints of Devil May Cry in its DNA, as your basic rootin-tootin slap-and-shoot gameplay is quickly enhanced by a gauntlet that allows you to close distance and pull enemies in for a slobber-knocker blow.įlying Wild Hog has established itself as one of the masters of action in the current generation of gaming, and that pedigree is on full display here with Evil West. Within minutes, you’re diving into the core center of Evil West’s combat – a collection of hard-hitting moves that are very inspired by Sony Santa Monica’s recent God of War games, as Jesse can punch problems away and unleash a quick barrage of lead at anything in his general direction. While Jesse may have the personality of a mule’s backside throughout the game, at least he’s got the kick to match his not-so-sunny disposition when the odds are stacked against him. As Jesse Rentier, a seasoned hunter of humanity’s biggest pain in the neck, it’s up to you to slap leather and fill your hand with electrifying iron as you carve a path through grotesque abominations, rabid werewolves, and undead minions controlled by a sinister vampiric ringleader. In a wild west inhabited by vampire clans looking to step out of the shadows, Evil West’s elevator pitch is God of War meets Blade. It may not have a monolithic marketing campaign that has to be paid for by shoving microtransactions in your face every 15 seconds, but it does have scrappy attitude, solid action, and gruesome monsters for you to point your six-shooter at. Think Infernal, Singularity, and Bulletstorm – games that would otherwise fly under the radar if they didn’t have a neat hook that was worthy of praise.Įvil West is exactly that kind of game, a flawed and repetitive action-blaster that doesn’t give a damn, and still provides plenty of entertainment if you’re willing to switch your brain off for a few hours. Unburdened by subtle season pass adverts and unnecessary loot box grinds, Evil West is an ode to the golden age of 7/10 games that were designed to fill store shelves and earn a cult-classic status in the years after release. ![]() There’s a nostalgic and simple thrill to be had in Evil West, the latest game from Shadow Warrior developers Flying Wild Hog. But you could do Zettelkasten-style work in WF, with a slight bit more manual effort. Roam gives you more automatic stuff, and Roam can do it a bit more flexibly because Roam is a graph, while Workflowy is a tree. One limitation in WF is you only see the tags of the current viewable document, so it makes finding non-obvious links to other topics less likely. They use it more as a way to categorize, rather than a way to link ideas. I'd say most people don't use WF tags in this way. Tags in Workflowy are just clickable filters of the current viewable document, and so WF tags and Roam backlinks are both a kind of "automatic saved search". ![]() You can use links in Roam like you would use tags, although it kind of diminishes the purpose of linking then. In Roam you don't actually have a tagging system, you just have two different representations of bi-directional links, and one of them uses # which can look like a tag but it is not by its function. Bidirectional link can exist between two ideas that have no common tags. The purpose of link is to represent the association between those ideas, when I think of A it will likely spark a chain of associations and I will remember B, and vice versa. But when I look at the tag it has no context, I won't think of a specific idea, that tag is just a placeholder for ideas that share certain property, but the tag itself is not an idea.A bi-directional link is something that connects two ideas. I can have a list of ideas tagged with the same tag because when I look at any of those ideas I think of that common attribute they share. My personal experience is that I tag things to classify them and to sort them. And finally, tags in Roam are not just search terms, they are actually pages which you can edit.” (See the example image above where all the mentions of John Smith are highlighted from the notes about meetings in which he attended.) Third, the backlinks show up in the document as editable text, so you can work on them right there without having to open up the original document! Forth, you can filter and search your list of backlinks, quickly narrowing the list down to the most relevant results. (Because “Linked References” is a bit of a mouthful, I will just call them “backlinks” from now on.) Second, Bear tags work at the document level, but because Roam is an outliner, it can show you the exact paragraph that contained the relevant tag. Roam includes Linked References right in the document. “First, when you click on a tag in an app like Bear, you are taken out of the document you are working on to a list of files. ![]() See my blog post which is designed to answer this question. “Without a backflow prevention device or if it isn’t running properly, it could flow back into the drinking water system.”Ĭity Utilities customers will have until June 1 to have their tests completed and sent in. “If a homeowner has pesticides or fertilizers on the yard, that could siphon and dissolve in that water,” Pattinson said. While some devices can prevent backpressure into a system, Pattinson says that most homeowners could have backflow issues if the systems aren’t working correctly and are left unchecked. “It protects all of the customers using that particular water supply system.” “The backflow prevention device prevents water from back siphoning into the drinking water system or the main line,” Pattinson says. While different types of backflow prevention devices exist, Kristin Pattinson, Drinking Water Section Chief with the MO Department of Natural Resources, says the devices all do the same thing. The cross-connection is a connection between a source of pollution or contamination with a water supply. The Department defines backflow as an undesirable flow reversal in a water distribution system through a cross-connection. But those prices are cut by both a volume discount (always active) and a coupon discount that varies day to day. The list price for a two-device CleanMyMac subscription is $79.90, and for five devices it goes up to a whopping $199.75. A review focused on the cleanup side would take a different slant.Ī one-year one-Mac subscription for CleanMyMac costs $39.95, the same (or nearly so) as Bitdefender, ESET, Kaspersky, Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac, and Webroot. ![]() I'm evaluating this product as an antivirus utility for Macs, one that happens to have a big collection of bonus tools to clean and tune your Mac. The product's description clearly states that it "fights off malware, adware, ransomware, and all them -wares." A company representative contacted me about a review because they saw my other macOS antivirus reviews. The cleanup features are useful, but the core antivirus lacks some standard features, and we found verifying its efficacy almost impossible. CleanMyMac promises malware protection and detection, but it also encompasses a wide range of features to clean up and speed up your Mac. While CleanMyMac is clearly the company’s flagship product, other offerings include a photo cleaner, a universal archive opener, and even a wallpaper manager. MacPaw, which makes CleanMyMac, is different. So in my case, I actually have a device called a Padcaster that’s attached to my Sony DSLR camera lens and under it there’s a 5 1/2-inch field monitor used as a second display over HDMI attached to my PC with the display flipped so that the text reads the correct way and the text is directly in front of the lens. And if you’re just using the camera on top of your laptop or your monitor, you’ll be looking pretty far down to read your text. Okay, so now I have my prompter complete, but another key aspect of doing this well is getting the screen with Word to be as close as possible to your camera. Or I can bold and underline the text if I really want to land a point. So, for example, if I’m presenting with Megan, I can mark her name, change the highlight, and my name, also change the highlight, and with those different colors I can grab attention of the different presenters. Now, for that, you can use highlighting in Word to help grab attention. But let’s say we want to use this for a two-person presentation and want to get the attention of each speaker or punch up various parts of the script. Now, this will full-screen Word and make it so it looks like a teleprompter and now it’s ready to go. Now, the last thing, and a very key step that you’ll want to do in Word, is to switch on focus mode. Now our document is looking much more like a teleprompter but the font is still pretty small and if your camera’s far away or you’re going to project this onto a small screen then you’ll want to make the font larger and you can do that easily by using the zoom control in the bottom-right corner to get a comfortable font size. And to do that, just search in Word in the search box for page color, then set it to black. Now, this ensures that your font color will flip to white once we change the page color to black. ![]() Then go to the Home tab and make sure that you font color is set to Automatic. Now, to change the background color, first you’ll want to select all of your text by using Control + A. You can leave the page background white like mine is now, which is helpful if you’re using the screen to help with your camera’s lighting, but depending on your screen brightness or setup, the white background can also make your face too bright, or if you’re using an actual teleprompter device on your camera that works like a two-way mirror effectively, the white background sometimes can cause the image to look a little foggy or milky and to counter these effects you can easily change the background to black. Now, the next thing that you’ll want to do is disable the ruler at the top of the screen by unchecking this box. Now, this ensures that you can use the full width of the page and not need to scroll past page breaks, which can often appear mid-sentence. Here I have a script that I’m presenting from right now and the first thing that you’ll want to do in the View tab is change the view from Print Layout to Web Layout. So in my case, I’m using Microsoft Word and what I’ll demonstrate today works more or less the same way whether you’re on a PC or Mac. So in today’s work from home tip, I’ll show you how you can use Microsoft Word to easily convert any document into something that works perfectly as a teleprompter and I’ll show you how you can use Microsoft Teams as a way to project this teleprompter screen to a remote presenter or a second device, like a phone screen, that can be placed directly under your camera so that your eyes stay close to the camera lens. Now, if you’re not used to using a teleprompter, with a little practice reading into your camera a teleprompter can help get your presentations or speeches to the next level. If you’ve ever wondered how news anchors or public speakers can stay on point and present their topics in a crisp and concise way all within a limited timeframe, the chances are they’re using a teleprompter.
